Sky’s The Limit Gala To Support Special Olympics NB Athletes

An upcoming gala will focus on raising funds for programs provided by Special Olympics New Brunswick.

Co-Chair for this year’s gala Deanette Turner says it uses sport to help enrich the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities, “We have around 1000 athletes across the province who are supported by more than 400 coaches and volunteers. We also have ten regions. Each region is organized by a committee of volunteers.”

Turner says her daughters began coaching Special Olympics around seven years ago. She began attending some of the events with her husband and was hooked, “I don’t have a special Olympian, but I can assure everyone, they have definitely changed our lives.”

In February of 2020, Special Olympics athletes will be going to Thunder Bay, Ontario to participate in the National Winter games, “Team New Brunswick has around 51 athletes, coaches and support staff and they will be competing in five sports. It will be five pin bowling, curling, floor hockey speed skating and figure skating. So the funds raised directly go to the athletes.”

The Sky’s the Limit gala will be held on October 30th at Casino New Brunswick, with guest speaker Peter Mansbridge.
