Council Members Question Pest Control Services Agreement

Some Moncton city council members raised concerns in regards to a contract for pest control services at various locations.

A two year contract was awarded to Rentokil Canada for scheduled inspections and ‘as required’ visits.

Services will cover various all city-owned buildings, sports fields, trails and all Capital Works construction sites.

Councilor Pierre Boudreau wondered exactly what type of pests the company was equipped for.

“What would constitute a pest? Are we talking about bugs— what I’m getting at basically is are these people capable of dealing with rats?” Bourdeau asked.

City engineer, Jack MacDonald says that the company deals with all types of pests, including rats.

Brian Hicks says he has been getting countless rodent reports from citizens and the City isn’t addressing the issue well.

“They appreciate the limitation of by-law enforcement but they don’t want to have someone come to their property, take a look around and tell them what they have to do, because they have a clean yard and someone else doesn’t, They want the city of Moncton to address it,” he says.

Councilor Paul Pellerin, who’s also heard numerous rat-related complaints asked whether they could somehow include private properties in the contract.

City Manager Marc Landry says they can review the item and discuss whether those changes can be made.
