A former lumber mill has been destroyed by fire in Miramichi.
Firefighters responded to calls at the former Lumber Products Inc. building on Jane Street in Newcastle on Monday night.
Miramichi Fire Chief Tony Lloyd says flames were shooting about 70 feet in the air when firefighters arrived.
Videos and photos on social media show the building engulfed in flames.
Chief Lloyd says it took about four hours to get a handle on the fire but it wasn’t completely extinguished until early Tuesday afternoon.
The mill had been sitting empty for several years.
No one was hurt.
Chief Lloyd says the Fire Marshal is looking into the cause.
The Red Cross was on standby but nearby homes did not have to be evacuated.
