An outreach worker says concern is growing for the homeless population in Moncton as the weather continues to turn colder.
Trevor Goodwin with YMCA ReConnect says the change of seasons was the main reason why the Albert Street tent city had to be shut down.
“People sleeping in those elements, and the risk of setting fires to keep warm and then having those fires near tents and so forth… it’s a genuine concern.”
Goodwin says the two existing shelters have room for the former tent city residents at least until the new shelter on Albert Street is ready to open.
He believes the homeless population in Moncton has been declining in recent weeks.
The number is often fluid but he estimates about 100 people still need a permanent place to call home.
