Climate change activists all over the world will gather in Friday as part of a global protest.
In Moncton, over 600 people are expected to march from the Avenir Centre to City Hall.
Antoine Zboralski is the president of Symbiose, a student association for social justice and the environment at UdeM that co-ordinated the local march.
He says the protest is meant to raise awareness on the impacts of climate change and how to reduce them.
“This is more than just a crisis, it’s really an emergency. We need people to realize that we will never solve climate change, it’s something that will go on for decades, but what we can do is minimize the impact we have on it,” Zboralski says.
He says environmental activism is something that we should all be involved in because climate change impacts everyone.
“The idea is not just to march but to get involved with local organizations who are trying to find alternative ways to this current society,” says Zboralski.
He says they have two main goals for the march. The first get as many people as possible involved and thinking of the environment.
The second is to get politicians to take the climate emergency seriously.
“So really realizing that the current trajectory of our economic system is no longer viable so we just want them to realize that we should have other options on the table,” he says.
There will also be a citizens forum after the march where residents can express how they feel about the situation and discuss ways to reduce the community’s carbon footprint.
Zboralski says one of the main issues here in Moncton is carbon emissions due to the amount of cars.
He suggests improved transit and safer bicycle lanes as some ways the city can help fight climate change.
