With colder temperatures on the way, residents of the Albert Street tent city have are being asked to leave their home.
The city has issued an eviction notice and all those still living there must be gone by Wednesday.
YMCA ReConnect spokesperson, Trevor Goodwin says outreach volunteers are on site to help direct the 12 individuals who are still living there to the proper services.
“Some are accessing shelter beds, some are making arrangements with us to return to their home communities and others haven’t identified where they’re going yet,” he says.
The city says the safety and security of those vulnerable individuals is at the forefront and they will be working on finding affordable housing options for as many of them as possible.
Goodwin says most of them were receptive to moving to a shelter or rooming with friends or family.
“A small number out of that twelve, maybe 2 to 4 that might not be interested in access shelter services right now and may continue to live rough, sleeping on benches and other areas,” says Goodwin.
He adds that with the continued support of their volunteers that these few individuals will find better living situations.
The Department of Public Health is also expected to offer mental health and addiction services.
There is still no word on when the new shelter will open.
