Infrastructure Investments Proved Beneficial During Dorian

The city of Moncton has invested about 70 million dollars into emergency infrastructure over the last decade.

They have installed a number of storm drains all over the city and built retention ponds.

As a result, only 18 flooded basements were reported following Dorian, compared to 175 during tropical storm Danny in 2009 .

Mayor Dawn Arnold was glad to hear how successful their efforts were.

Additional precautionary measures included draining a number of lakes such as Jones Lake and the Centennial Park pond.

Fortunately, the heavy rain and high tide did not coincide, which would have contributed to the flooding.

Mayor Arnold says the city is always looking at being proactive in situations like this.

After the storm, the Emergency Measures Organization looked at things to improve on for the next extreme weather forecast.

Fire Chief Conrad Landry says at the peak, 20 thousand people were without electricity. Consequently, they received numerous requests for charging stations.

EMO is now working on putting in place designated spots where people can go to charge devices, grab coffee and a bite to eat .
