Many concerns were raised for those living in tent cities in our city, as high winds and heavy rain hit on Saturday night.
The two shelters in the community opened their doors for those who wanted to take shelter from the storm.
Founder and Executive Director for Harvest House Atlantic Cal Maskery says 73 people came to their shelter.
“We wanted to make sure we were available. They were coming in through the night. We left it open because we knew the storm was heavy and that some would come in after their tents collapsed. There are several different tent sites, so we didn’t ask them when they came in, but they could have been from any one of the tent sites nearby,” Maskery says.

Maskery says the Operations Manager plans to reach out and help assess the needs of those who lost their tents and other items in the storm.
Mayor Dawn Arnold posted a thank you to all of the REconnect staff who also helped those living in tents, who encouraged them to go to a shelter for the night. She says many of them stayed at the tent site until around 11 o’clock for the final four people who did not want to seek permanent shelter.
