The last thing you want to encounter on your vacation, is bedbugs.
They continue to be a problem in Canada, and hotels are one of several places you find them.
When you first enter your hotel room, Orkin Pest Control Spokesperson Scott Patrick suggests one of the first things you should do, “Probably the best thing that someone can do when they check into a hotel is put their luggage, believe it our not, in the bathtub. Bedbugs don’t usually go in there because they can’t climb out.”
Patrick says you should lift up the sheet on the bed and the mattress cover and check around the seams to see if anything is moving, “Bedbugs also tend to hide in behind baseboards and in electrical sockets, so it makes it very difficult.”
Before they feed on human blood, bedbugs are very small, like specks of pepper. Afterwards they become engorged.
Patrick says bedbugs are brought in by guests, and can be found in any hotel, “Not just hotels that may be dirty or small. People tend to choose the bigger brand names ones because they are the ones that are easiest to find online.”
If you are bitten, he says everyone reacts differently, “Some people will immediately begin scratching, while others may not notice anything for a couple of hours or days. Once you have them though you will know. If you take them home, you will become a carrier and spread them until you get rid of them”
He also says bedbugs can survive for up to a year without feeding.
