June is parks and recreation month and one of our local parks is celebrating a major milestone.
Irishtown Park turns 25 on Saturday and is offering free canoe and kayak rentals from 10 to 2.
It is one of the largest urban parks in Canada and is home to Moncton’s very first pressurized water source.
Dan Hicks, director of park operations says it was turned into the reservoir in the late 18 hundreds.
“The Irishtown reservoir was no longer required as a water reservoir for the city so in 1996 it got designated as the Irishtown Nature Park from a council meeting and was officially recognized on June 6th, 1996” says Hicks.
Hicks says although they try an incorporate new elements to the park, it is foremost a conservation park.
The newest addition is a pair of stationary binoculars, free to use by all park-goers.
The park is a great way to enjoy nature while revisiting a piece of the city’s history.
