Ramadan recognized with sign at Moncton city hall

A sign has gone up in front of Moncton city hall, recognizing the holy month of Ramadan.

The request for the acknowledgement came from the Muslim Association of Moncton.

City councillors voted unanimously this week in favour of the request.

Asmaa Badawy says with the growing number of Muslims in Moncton, this is very important.

“It’s a small step but it can make a big difference,” says Badawy.

Badawy adds around the world, around 2 billion Muslims celebrate the Holy month.

She says many are very active in their communities and help make them a better place to live.

“Canadian Muslims actively engage in charitable initiatives during Ramadan, supporting local food banks, shelters and community organizations,” says Badawy.

Mayor Dawn Arnold adds officials were meeting with others in Edmonton this week to discuss policies for displaying religious symbols.

The sign will be displayed throughout Ramadan, which ends on April 9.
