Sixth Right Whale Calf Spotted So Far This Winter

More encouraging news for the North Atlantic Right Whale this week.

Marine volunteers in Florida have spotted another mother and her calf along the state’s east coast near Daytona Beach.

The latest discovery means that six calves have been sighted off the Florida coast this winter.

This region is the known calving area for Right Whales.

No calves were spotted last year.

Typically the mammals migrate northward in the spring for feeding in waters surrounding Atlantic Canada.

The endangered Right Whale has been facing major threats from vessel strikes and entanglements in fishing gear.

U.S. officials say the population is estimated at about 450 in the north Atlantic Ocean.
