The Financial and Consumer Services Commission is reporting New Brunswickers lost $1.1 million to frauds and scams in 2018.
Identity, romance, and job scams were the most common.
There were 102 reports of identity fraud, totalling losses of $203,946 while 20 romance scams cost $353,361.
There were 17 complaints of job scams, with total losses reaching $208,643.
That total is down from 2017, but the FCNB says that is likely a result of underreporting of scams because people are often ashamed or embarrassed to admit to being scammed.
However, they say it’s important to come forward, as your experience may help someone else avoid being scammed.
