The federal government is taking another a step closer to making seatbelts mandatory on school buses.
Back in July, federal Transportation Minister Marc Garneau committed to making school buses safer by requiring seatbelts on new school buses built beyond 2020.
During a meeting this week, Garneau said that a task force would be created including school boards and school bus manufacturers.
Garneau says seatbelts can be made mandatory on new buses, but the government will have to work with the provinces and school boards to have them installed on older buses as well.
Some of the issues that need to be considered include how to ensure seatbelts are properly attached and worn, and how to get the kids out quickly if there is an accident.
Transport Canada first proposed seat belt requirements in 2017.
