Health Canada has launched a two month consultation period for proposed regulations surrounding the sale of cannabis infused edibles, extracts and topicals.
The government is proposing a hard cap of 10 milligrams of THC per package of edible cannabis – that rises to one-thousand milligrams per package for topical products like creams, or lotions.
For extracts, the cap is 10 milligrams of THC per unit, for example, a capsule, with a maximum of one thousand milligrams in a package.
The products will be subject to existing laws similar to those for dried cannabis, including child resistant and plain packaging.
In addition, none of those products can contain claims suggesting health or nutritional benefits.
In order to ensure safety and integrity of Canada’s food system, edibles could not be produced in the same facility as food.
Edibles and associated products are expected to be available no later than October 17th, 2019.
