Anglophone East DEC Member Seeks Clarification On School Delays

More clarification is needed with the provincials government’s decision to delay school projects.

Anglophone East District Education Council member Norval McConnell understands the government had to make some difficult decisions, but in the case of Bessborough School, he wants to know what the timelines are, “We’re in a challenging fiscal situation. We realize that the government has to make difficult choices. In this particular case, one of those difficult choices directly impacts the community in which I live. We have invested a lot of time and energy to try and get the schools back up to snuff.”

McConnell says when the DEC meets in January, he will make a request through the Chair, for more information from the provincial government, “These things aren’t going away so we need to get answers. We need clarity on what the word delayed means. What timeline is there, what longer term plans do they have? Are they different than what has already been approved? We don’t have the answers to those questions just yet.”

The provincial government released its capital budget earlier this week. It included a list of delayed education projects, including plans for a new school to replace Bessborough and Hillcrest in the west end of Moncton.
