6 Of 15 Counties In New Brunswick Identified As ‘Risk Areas’ For Blacklegged Ticks

Fully 40 per cent of New Brunswick’s counties are designated as risk areas for encountering blacklegged ticks.

This comes after York County was added to the list, with chief medical officer of health Dr. Jennifer Russell warning those particular ticks can spread the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

The risk areas are so broad, because of the challenges inherent in defining precise geographical limits of tick populations.

Dr. Russell says you can limit your risk to ticks by using appropriate tick repellents, avoiding contact with tall grasses, and keeping covered.

If you do find a tick, you should detach it immediately using fine tipped tweezers or specifically designed tick removal devices.

York County is the sixth county added to the list, joining Westmorland, Albert, Kings, Saint John, and Charlotte counties.

Further information is available HERE and an updated online map of risk areas can be found HERE.
