N.B. Green MLA calls for higher minimum wage

The provincial Green party is calling on the province to increase the minimum wage.

Kent North MLA Kevin Arseneau says at $14.75, New Brunswick’s minimum wage is the lowest in Atlantic Canada and the second lowest in the country.

He says it needs to be increased to a living wage.

In 2022, the Human Development Council calculated living wages at around $20.85 for Moncton and $21.60 for Saint John.

“For years, the government has subsidized large corporations for millions of dollars. Meanwhile, small and medium businesses are having difficulty attracting and retaining employees,” added Arseneau. “The government should step up to support them to transition to paying living wages, rather than subsidize multimillion-dollar profit corporations.”
