Halifax is moving toward designating a seat on council for a Mi’kmaq representative.
Something that has been talked about for years.
Monday, the standing committee for HRM recommended council vote on a proposal to ask the province for a change to its charter, to allow the seat.
Councillor Waye Mason said they have heard over and over again that there should be a designated Mi’kmaq seat, a common theme during consultations on Halifax’s new culture and heritage priorities plan.
If the change goes through, Mason said the voting process could have a similar model to the former school board, where members to choose to vote for people running for a designated seat, but ultimately any model could be created in discussion with Mi’kmaq representatives.
Mason said he hopes the charter could change as early as next spring.
