3rd Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is hosting it’s 3 local event over the weekend.

Director of the run, Judy Cyr says officers throughout the world participate to raise money for the Special Olympics.

“We have a walk for kids, a run, a 5k, a 10k and also a 5k walk where people get to participate and mingle with the athletes, so it brings that sense of family and that sense of togetherness,” she says.

She says an athlete will also actually be participating in the event.

The organization has held events around the world for nearly 40 years and raised over 63 million in Canada.

Cyr says all funds raised by law enforcement will go to Special Olympics for athletes to compete in various events.

“This brings awareness for our Special Olympians to participate in great activities on municipal, provincial, national and international grounds. Many of our athletes, in Moncton, have participated internationally in competitions,” she says.

She says last year, they held a 3-day conference that raised 6 thousand dollars through things like a silent auction and 50/50 draws.

Other fundraising events include motorcycle rides, polar plunges and police pizza parties.

Cyr says Special Olympians love law enforcement and all they do.

“The athletes just love it and the energy it brings to law enforcement that participate in this activity, they come out and they say ‘this gave me the boost for my day’,” she says.

This year’s Family Run will be held on Saturday morning at the Chocolate River Station.
