31st Anniversary Of Ukraine’s Independence Day

Wednesday marks the 31st anniversary of Independence Day in Ukraine.

It was on this day in 1991 that the European nation broke free from the Soviet Union.

But there will not be any celebrations in Ukraine’s capital of Kyiv to mark the occasion.

Officials in Ukraine are worried there could be increased attacks by Russia.

This year’s holiday also falls on the six-month anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Millions of residents have fled the country since the invasion began on Feb. 24.

That includes more than 900 Ukrainians who have been welcomed into New Brunswick.
