RCMP monitoring for tent sites in Tri-communities as weather improves

As weather conditions improve, Codiac RCMP is planning ahead to deal with those living rough.

Superintendent Ben Jolette told Riverview Town Council they’ll be connecting with all three municipalities.

“The team continues to put emphasis on connecting with the most vulnerable people in the community. All three communities in the Greater Moncton area have had tent sites, and there were some in Riverview. We are reviewing so we know exactly who to call and what to do and be set. Two shelters in Moncton have extended their services until June 30th, so it’s going to be interesting in the coming weeks to see if there are people leaving the shelters and leaving the downtown and moving out,” Jolette says.

In the fall, Jolette says there were 43 tent sites in all three communities, but that dropped to less than five in the winter months, with colder weather and the shelters.

He adds in future, the RCMP plan to let Council members know when tent sites in Riverview are dismantled, “I’m going to bring that to council just so you have an idea if people are calling or emailing and have questions.”
