3 people killed in Fredericton crash

Three people have died after police say their car hit a tree and landed on another vehicle in Fredericton.

First responders were called to Douglas Avenue on the city’s north side around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Police said the driver and two occupants of the car died at the scene from their injuries. A fourth person sustained critical injuries while a fifth person suffered minor injuries.

The occupants of the second vehicle sustained minor injuries, according to police.

Investigators believe the vehicle was travelling at “a high rate of speed” just before the crash.

“This is a terrible tragedy, and our most heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of the deceased, and those impacted by the accident,” Chief Martin Gaudet said in a news release.

Gaudet said their thoughts are also with the first responders who attended the scene.

No details about the victims have been released. Police said more information will be provided as the investigation continues.
