Vacant Home On Melville Street Extensively Damaged

Another house fire in central Moncton kept firefighters very busy.

Moncton Fire Platoon Chief Brian McDonald says the vacant and partially boarded up two-storey residence on Melville Street was reported at around 9:30 pm Tuesday night.

When they arrived, there was a fire in the attached garage, which quickly spread to the home.

Four of five Moncton stations responded to the scene to help battle the fire.

McDonald says it took around two hours to extinguish, in very cold temperatures.

“Temperatures, like we were dealing with, made it challenging because the equipment freezes, specifically the breathing apparatus,” McDonald says.

Wind chills were in the minus 20s overnight.

McDonald adds there was no live power or heat in the home when the fire broke out.

There is extensive damage to the residence.

The cause is under investigation by the Fire Marshall and RCMP.
