2018 Forest Fire Season Begins April 16th

The New Brunswick 2018 forest fire season officially begins April 16th, and runs until October 31st.

The province has four categories for fires, ranging from fires under three metres in diameter in Category 1, all the way to prescribed burning of a piece of land for specific forest management, or other land use in Category 4.

Category one fires do not need a written permit, but burning must be allowed in the area, and people must get permission via phone or online.

However, the other three categories required written permission from the Department of Energy and Resource Development.

The specific details for each category of fire are on the Government of New Brunswick website.

Anyone who starts a fire on forest land is responsible for it, and can be held liable for the cost of fighting the fire, and/or the destruction of other people’s property.

They could also face criminal penalties.
