Toronto Police say they aren’t finished laying charges in that fatal van attack on Yonge Street.
In an update to media this afternoon, Toronto Police Detective Sergeant Graham Gibson says suspect Alek Minassian will face another charge in this case.
He’s been charged with ten counts of first-degree murder, along with 13 counts of attempted murder, but Gibson says they’ll add a 14th attempted murder charge “shortly” after further investigation.
Gibson acknowledged that Minassian is alleged to have made a “cryptic” social media post just before the attack occured, he couldn’t say anything about any possible motive.
“As you can imagine, the investigation is extremely detailed and ongoing, and because the accused has been charged, I’m restricted from discussing any evidence involved in the investigation,” Gibson added.
Ontario’s Chief Coroner Dr. Dirk Huyer was also at the media conference, explaining that they’re not ready to announce any of the victims’ names.
While they understand families’ desire to know whether their loved ones were hurt or killed, confirming each person’s identity is time-consuming and complicated.
“It occurred in a very busy pedestrian area, and it occurred in over a significant distance,” Huyer points out.
Huyer says they don’t expect to make any of the victims’ identities public for several days. (Photo: Screenshot)
