Former Moncton Mayor passes away

A man who helped to lead the city of Moncton from 2008 to 2016 has died.

George Leblanc passed away on Monday at the Moncton Hospital after a long battle with the neurodegenerative disorder, corticobasal syndrome.

Leblanc served most recently as mayor and also served three terms as a city councillor from 1995 to 2004.

According to Leblanc’s obituary, the former mayor and lawyer was instrumental in helping to unite and rebuild the community in the aftermath of the 2014 RCMP tragedy. He also helped to fulfill the vision of revitalizing Moncton’s downtown core and the construction of the Avenir Centre.

He became a recipient of the Order of Moncton in 2024 and was a longtime Rotarian.

Leblanc was also a longtime volunteer for several organizations, including Moncton Headstart and the Moncton Boys and Girls Club.

A celebration of life for George Leblanc will be held in the spring.
