A musical trip to Bikini Bottom, with Bernice McNaughton theatre students

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

SpongeBob SquarePants, of course.

Artistic and Musical director Rebecca Moore says they have chosen The SpongeBob Musical for the annual musical production at Bernice McNaughton High School this year.

Over 50 students will take a trip to Bikini Bottom from February 12 to 15, and the public is invited to come along.

“It’s really a story about community, courage, friendship, and choosing hope when everything feels uncertain. Those are the things I hope people resonate with,” Moore explained.

The decision came back in May 2025 to start the ball rolling with this production.

“I love that it’s family friendly and suitable for all ages. We love being able to host some of our younger feeder schools, and this is a great option for us. We also really like that these are sea creatures, and we don’t really care about the genders of sponges or stars or things like that, so there are more options for casting. There are also lots of great chorus numbers in this show,” Moore told our newsroom.

The SpongeBob Musical has not been performed by a lot of area schools. Moore said it came out in the late 2010’s on Broadway, but she feels COVID cut the life of the show short.

“COVID kind of finished its run on Broadway a bit prematurely, but one of the dance sequences from the opening number was trending on TikTok just before Christmas, so that certainly helped its status, I guess,” Moore stated.

They’re still putting the finishing touches on decorating to give the stage that underwater feel, but Moore explained they are trying to make this one a little more immersive for the audience, with decorations where they are seated.

“There will even be a surprise as they go through the doors into the theatre. We have some special lighting effects that will hopefully give the illusion that we are underwater. Once again, one of our amazing staff, Steve Cormier, has created some amazing digital backgrounds, so I think that will really add to it,” Moore expressed.

Casting was held in September, and rehearsals have been underway since then.

Moore also said not only do these productions help introduce students to musicals and theatre, but they also show the community the value of the arts.

Some of the funds raised through the purchase of tickets will go to the Bernice McNaughton theatre renovation project.

Tickets are available online and also at the door. The cost is $20 for adults and $15 for students.

On February 12, 13 and 14, there’s a 7 pm show, and on the 15, there’s a 2 pm matinee.
