Hunt underway for the next Riverview Town Crier

Hear ye, hear ye! The Town of Riverview is searching for its next Town Crier.

Mayor Andrew Leblanc says their previous crier Gerry Forsythe passed away last year.

They’re looking for a volunteer who would like to fill the role.

“In Riverview, for our Town Crier, there’s an official uniform that comes with it. They come to lots of community events, for example, the Light Up Riverview launch or the New Year’s Day levy. They’ll be kicking off the oath of office ceremony for whoever gets elected to the new council in Riverview after May 11th,” Leblanc told our newsroom.

Leblanc added that they are a part of all of the different festivals as well, helping to engage residents and celebrate the community.

Applications for the role can be submitted until February 18, on the Town of Riverview website.

Leblanc says they’ll narrow the applicants down after that, and those who are shortlisted will be contacted directly for a live audition of sorts towards the end of February.

“The previous Town Crier was really passionate about his community, and really passionate about wanting to make Riverview a better place. He also helped celebrate all of the things that make the town great. Those are the values I’m hoping will really shine through with whoever becomes the next Town Crier,” Leblanc explained.

He added that Riverview residents often mention they love the small town feel of Riverview.

“A theatrical take would help, and if you can project your voice. Knowing how to ring a bell really loudly is also a good skill set to have,” Leblanc joked.

Applicants must be residents of Riverview, 18 or older, and comfortable with public speaking and performance. They cannot be an elected official, and they cannot be a candidate who is considering running for office or a town employee.
