Man drowns in St. Croix River

A man is dead after trying to cross the St. Croix River between St. Stephen and the U.S border.

RCMP say the man was seen entering the water on Saturday afternoon, near King Street and Budd Avenue, and he began swimming.

The man was wanted on unendorsed warrants.

In an email, RCMP Corporal Matthew Leblanc-Smith says when the man reached the midway point, he began to struggle. He went underwater and did not resurface.

US Border Patrol was called in along with the Canadian and US Coast Guard and local fire departments.

His body was located on Sunday by the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team (URT).

The Serious Incident Response team was contacted to conduct an independent review of the incident.
