Firefighters battle large brush fire in Moncton

A challenging brush fire for the Moncton Fire Department.

Heavy smoke was spotted in a wooded area in the Carson Drive region at around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Moncton Fire Platoon Chief Keith Guptill says it was a fairly large fire and Riverview Fire and Rescue was called in for assistance.

“The terrain due to recent clear-cutting, and the winds made it tough for firefighters,” says Guptill.

They were on scene for around three hours as they made sure all hot spots were extinguished.

He believes this started as four separate fires. They are considered to be suspicious, and the RCMP are investigating.

He adds brush fires are becoming more of a concern due to the lack of snow melt this winter, creating very dry conditions.
