Tribute in Riverview park for former student who died tragically

A memorial to remember a former Frank L. Bowser school student in Riverview.

Twenty-one-year-old Alexandria Wortman died in Halifax in January after she was struck by a vehicle in a crosswalk.

Home and School President Lara Lavoie says her name has been engraved at the Rebecca Schofield All World Park behind the school, “After we had heard of Alexandria’s passing, a teacher suggested the memorial. Normally, we would send flowers, but the engraved board was suggested instead.”

Wortman was born in Moncton and attended school in Riverview. She was continuing her education at King’s College and Dalhousie University when she was tragically killed.

“What I had heard from her family was that she loved the park and they loved that it was out next to a bench so they could sit and remember,” Lavoie adds.

“Doing something like this is very on brand for us. We’re just a very tight community,” Lavoie added.

According to the obituary for Wortman, she fiercely advocated for human rights, diversity and inclusion at any opportunity. “She abhorred social injustice or inequity and passionately supported and defended any marginalized, underprivileged or at-risk group or individual.”

A 32-year-old man is facing nine charges, including impaired driving causing Wortman’s death.
