New equipment for Moncton Fire thanks to Firehouse Subs

A big financial boost for the Moncton Fire Department from a local restaurant franchise.

They received a grant for over $ 42,000 from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation of Canada.

The cheque was presented on Thursday at the restaurant location on Mountain Road in Moncton.

New Brunswick Franchisee Daniel Murphy says it was the first grant in Atlantic Canada, “We weren’t expecting it to happen so quickly. We just opened in November, but proud to present that cheque.”

The Public Safety Foundation was created in 2005 when two former firefighters created the Firehouse Subs brand in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. It first came to Canada in 2015, and since then, it has raised over $5 million for local first responders.

Moncton Fire Chief Conrad Landry says the department applied for the grant, and they were very excited to hear that they were chosen to receive it.

“We decided to use the grant for rescue tools. Specifically, the rescue tools are used to lift heavy equipment. For example, train derailments or a large tractor-trailer, or if there’s a building collapse, or stuff like that. So it’s for lifting, and also cribbing. This is a huge addition to our rescue tools, and it’s just going to make the citizens safer and our firefighters ‘ jobs a little easier.”

These types of tools are new to the Moncton Fire Department. Landry says they had some capability in the past, but unfortunately, they weren’t able to lift some really heavy equipment or buildings. So they now they’re now in a really good position to respond to those types of calls.

“The funds come from donations from our loyal guests who get behind and support the foundation. We also hold various events to raise money throughout the year. Guests can also purchase pickle buckets for $3 a piece, and all that money goes towards the foundation as well,” Murphy adds.

Two grants are awarded each year from the Foundation.

Firehouse Subs opened its first New Brunswick location in Moncton in November. A second location was opened in Saint John in March 2025.
