NB Village Hopes For Win In ParticipACTION Challenge

Salisbury, New Brunswick residents are getting active!

They’re competing to become the top community in the country in this year’s ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge.

Organizations, schools, sports groups, recreation centres, and workplaces are participating by tracking group activities organized in-person or virtually, including exercise classes, practices, events or even lunchtime walks.

Every minute tracked between June 1 and 30th goes toward your municipality’s score.

Mayor Robert Campbell says they entered in 2021, and proved themselves, “We came third in the province and 28th in the country and we learned a lot and came back this year, and as a community, we are trying to shoot for number one in Canada.”

Campbell says for a small village they do big things, “It has been very heartwarming with a seniors group out there doing so many different activities, games, and competitions. The youth and families, everyone has come together just to have fun with this,”

As of Wednesday morning, the Village of Salisbury sat in first place in the province, and third nationally in the Challenge.

“Win or lose, being among places like Toronto, Laval, Edmonton, Red Deer, and those types of places, it makes you feel good that your residents can compete at any level and that’s not just in a ParticipACTION challenge, that’s pretty much anything in life,” Campbell adds.

The top prize is $100, 000 nationally, and $15,000 provincially.

“It’s really been good to watch the residents in the community. When you believe, you achieve,” Campbell stated.

Albert County, New Brunswick, including Hillsborough, Harvey, Riverside-Albert, and Alma is also ranked in the top ten nationally.

The deadline to record your active minutes in the challenge is midnight on June 30th.
