Specialists called in after artillery shell discovered in Riverview

The discovery of an unexploded artillery shell doesn’t happen every day.

But on March 30, Codiac RCMP were called to Riverview to investigate.

“An individual reported finding an unexploded artillery shell in the forest near the Pat Crossman Memorial Aquatic Centre. It was while clearing a brush for a frisbee golf course,” says Superintendent Benoit Jolette.

He adds it was one of those situations where individuals who are specialized have to be called in, “We called upon the services of the RCMP explosive disposal unit. They hurried themselves to the scene and also contacted CFB Gagetown. They also arrived in the area. We learned that there was an actual former Air Defence Installation in the 40s or 50s on that location.”

Officers were called in at around noon, and by 6:30 pm, the members of CFB Gagetown had arrived and disposed of the shell.

It turned out it was a 25-pound armour-piercing tracer, but it did not contain explosives.
