Ukrainian families continue to flee their war torn country.
It is expected most who come to New Brunswick will choose Moncton because it has the most active Ukrainian community in the province.
Spokesperson for the Ukrainian Club of Moncton Nataliia Haidash says they have volunteers specifically working on finding accommodations, “We have a list of host, local families, local homeowners who could provide temporary accommodations free of charge for a week, month or a couple of months. We already had around 60 host families on the list. We are matching newcomers with host families. Some people they couldn’t pay for accommodations but there are also some that had a small amount of money and the volunteers helped them to find an apartment for rent.”
Haidash was disappointed by some landlords who tried to take advantage by asking these families for a year of rent up front, because they have no credit history in Canada.
At least another 100 Ukrainians are expected to arrive in Moncton in the next month. About 200 have already relocated to the Hub City since the war with Russia began.
Donations for Ukrainian families are still being accepted on Park Street, in the former St. Andrews Presbyterian Church on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4pm to 8pm and on Saturday to 10a,m to 4pm.
