Rising Tide Community Initiatives Inc has partnered with Harvest House Atlantic for its second affordable housing property.
The second property has seven units, including a one bedroom apartment and six bachelor apartments.
Managing Director Myriam Mekni says, “But it is not affordable housing as per the definition that is common. I think in community, affordable housing is known as 80 per cent of market rate. But we know that 80 per cent of market rate now is not affordable by most of our community members. Clients right now have to be on NB Housing waiting list. There are certain criteria for them to qualify. This is for this type of residence, but there will be affordable housing options in the future.”
Mekni says their second building is for clients who need a roof over the head and resources, and that is why social development is assisting.
“All of them are clients of Harvest House and every client has what he or she needs while living in these residences. We want to guarantee that all of the clients will receive the supports that the intake process identifies as needs. Rising Tide opened its first building in 2021 in partnership with the YWCA. It is currently working its third and fourth apartment buildings to be available in the next month or two, “The next one is going to have about 21 units. There is another one about the same period of time, it is going to have 16 units. By the end of March or first or second week of April, we are aiming to have 82 units.”
A total of $15.4 million is being provided between the federal, provincial and municipal governments over three years to have 160 units by 2023.
