The Moncton Mayhem is looking to recruit more players.
The women’s football program has been around since 2004, but the team was formerly known as the Moncton Vipers.
They’re optimistic that they’ll hit at least 30 players this season.
“For this season, we’ll be practicing Tuesdays and Thursdays in the evening. Practices start at 7:30 and run until around 9:30. Game days are Saturdays. The ages are 18 plus,” Treasurer Gerry Pellerin says.
Competing teams include the Saint John Storm, Halifax Explosion and the Fredericton Gladiators.
With the growth in high school girls’ football, many graduate and decide to continue playing as adults. Pellerin expects that will reflect in their numbers for this season.
“We have nine coaching staff on site, and we help teach and mould the players. Football is one of those lucky sports where you don’t need to be a marathon runner. There are quick bursts of 10 to 15 second plays, and then you get a little rest so there’s a place on the football field for all athletes and all body types. There’s a place on the football field for everybody,” Pellerin stresses.
The first practice for the Moncton Mayhem is on March 11. They’ll take a look at the interested players and what positions they might fit in and where they are at skill and athletic-wise.
The cost to play is around $460, but that includes all of your gear, except for cleats. It also includes insurance to play and field time. All of the gear is rented from the Greater Moncton Football Association.
