Nothing is left of an abandoned home on Wesley Street after a fire.
Moncton Fire responded on Sunday afternoon at around 1:30.
“The first thing crews reported was heavy fire coming from the rear of the abandoned building. It was under construction, and that hindered some fire suppression activities,” Platoon Chief Brad Calhoun told our newsroom.
Seventeen firefighters who were on the scene managed to contain the fire to one building, and it took around two hours to extinguish.
Two trucks, two engines and a rescue truck were utilized at the scene.
“It was challenging at first, considering the heavy fire volume, and the wind played a factor. It was quite windy, which did hinder us a bit. But the guys and girls did a great job of getting it knocked down and keeping it to that building and protecting the exposure,” Calhoun adds.
There was significant damage to the building, and it has now been torn down.
“It was not safe to leave it standing. The building was under construction, which also hampered fire suppression efforts, just because the first and second floors were exposed studs. There was no drywall. They had it all torn apart, so it allowed the fire to travel through pretty quickly,” Calhoun says.
The home was a two-storey, with a walk-up attic.
There’s no word on a cause at this point. Luckily, no one was hurt.
“The fire depleted our resources in the city, and we had to call in off-duty staff to manage a spare engine. We also put Dieppe on standby to assist with any other calls that came in,” Calhoun added.
