The Liberal Party announced a new federal leader will be chosen on March 9 through a nation-wide voting race.
This decision follows the recent announcement that Justin Trudeau is stepping down as prime minister and party leader.
Individuals must become registered Liberals by Jan. 27 to be eligible to vote, according to the Liberal Party’s media release.
The National Board of Directors met Thursday evening to discuss and outline the initial rules of the upcoming leadership race.
They made the following decisions:
- The entrance fee for leadership contestants is set at $350,000
- Candidates must declare their participation by Jan. 23
- Suzanne Cowan and Marc-Etienne Vien will co-chair the Leadership Vote Committee
- MP Patricia Lattanzio and John Herhalt will co-chair the Leadership Expense Committee
- The party must publicly post the registration procedures for the leadership vote 27 days before the vote.
The leadership vote will conclude on March 9, with the new leader announced on the same day.
