Shortage of NB Phlebotomists Prompts CCNB Program

CCNB, Vitalite Health Network and WorkingNB have teamed up to offer a program to help deal with a shortage of those who are trained to draw blood.

The eight week free online training in phlebotomy that is offered in French will start May 31st.

The Dean for the School of Health and Community Services in Campbellton Julie Cyr says this is a stackable micro-certification. “Students who register in the program will be able to acquire the competencies necessary for drawing blood samples. This training is also transferable and may be used as a pathway to other CCNB programs related to the health field, including the medical laboratory assistance and medical laboratory sciences programs.”

Those with a high school diploma or GED can apply.

“During the first six weeks, students will complete a combination of theory training in the classroom and in the lab in their respective region. During the last two weeks, they will complete a placement in one of the Network’s health centres,” says Yves Goudreau, Director of Laboratory Services at Vitalité Health Network.

He adds, “We are aware of the recruiting challenges in phlebotomy and we know how important offering this type of training is for filling our many vacant positions, some 15 province-wide. This program not only provides free education, but also the opportunity to study and work here in New Brunswick.”

Anyone interested in this new micro-certification should send their resumé and a copy of their diploma or their transcript to the following address: nancy.godbout-levesque@ccnb.ca.
